Things To Do In and Around Saranda

🏖️ Saranda Beach

The main beach runs along the harbour promenade — pebble beach, clean water and views toward Corfu. More functional than spectacular but pleasant for a swim. The sunset from Saranda's waterfront (looking toward Corfu lit by the setting sun) is genuinely beautiful. Beach bars and restaurants line the promenade.

🏰 Lëkurësi Castle

The restored Ottoman castle on the hill above Saranda offers the finest view in the area — a 360-degree panorama taking in Saranda, Ksamil, Butrint Lake, Corfu and the Albanian mountains. The castle has a restaurant and café. Best at sunset. Taxi from town €5–6 each way.

🏛️ Butrint (Day Trip — Essential)

18km south of Saranda — the UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site built by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Venetians over 2,500 years. One of the Mediterranean's finest ancient sites, almost tourist-free compared to comparable Greek or Italian equivalents. Taxi from Saranda: €15–20 return. Allow 2–3 hours at the site. Combine with a Ksamil afternoon for a perfect full day.

💧 Blue Eye Spring (Syri i Kaltër)

25km east of Saranda — a natural spring surging up from an unmeasured depth, creating a vivid electric blue "eye" visible from the surface. The water is an extraordinary clarity and constant 18°C. The surrounding forested river valley is beautiful. Free to access. Organised tours from Saranda include Butrint, Blue Eye and Ksamil in one day trip — excellent value.

⛴️ Day Trip to Corfu

Corfu is 4km from Saranda across the Ionian — a 35-minute ferry crossing (Ionian Seaways and Finikas Lines, approximately €20–25 one-way). A day trip to Corfu Town from Saranda is straightforward — the contrast between prosperous, developed Corfu and the more raw authenticity of Albania is striking and illuminating. Ferries run multiple times daily in summer.

Where to Eat in Saranda

The waterfront restaurants are fine but more expensive than one street back. Best options: Restaurant Butrinti (fish, Butrint Lake shrimp — excellent), Guri i Kuq (traditional Albanian, good value), and the simple fish tavernas at Ksamil (15 minutes south) which are cheaper and have better seafood than anywhere in Saranda itself.

FAQs

Is Saranda worth visiting?
As a base for Ksamil, Butrint and the Blue Eye — yes, absolutely. As a destination in itself it's pleasant but unremarkable. Stay 2–3 nights and use it as your Riviera base.

Can you see Corfu from Saranda?
Yes — Corfu is directly visible across 4km of water. The contrast of seeing a Greek island that clearly from Albania is striking. The ferry crossing takes 35 minutes.

Is Saranda safe?
Very safe. Standard city awareness applies. The waterfront is lively and well-lit at night. Taxis are cheap and reliable for getting back from Ksamil after dark.
