Caldera sunsets, volcanic beaches & the most iconic views in Greece
🔥 Check Top Tours Now 🏨 Compare Hotel PricesSantorini (officially Thira) is a volcanic island in the southern Aegean Sea, roughly 200km southeast of the Greek mainland. It's the remnant of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history — what you see today is the curved caldera rim, with sheer cliffs dropping 300m into the sea below.
The island's two main towns — Fira (the capital) and Oia (the famous village with the blue-domed churches) — cling to these cliffs with breathtaking views across the caldera. It's one of the most photographed landscapes on earth.
💡 Quick Santorini facts:
Santorini is one of the most visited islands in the world — and it shows. In peak summer (July–August), cruise ships disgorge 10,000+ day-trippers into Oia daily, turning the famous sunset viewpoint into a standing-room-only scrum. Prices are high. Queues are long.
But visit in May, June or September — and it's an entirely different experience. The caldera views are genuinely extraordinary. The sunsets from Oia are as magical as advertised. The wine (Assyrtiko from volcanic soil) is world-class. The black and red sand beaches are unlike anything in Europe.
The verdict: Worth it — if you time it right and book early. Santorini is expensive and crowded in peak season, but remains one of the most visually stunning destinations on earth.
Sail around the caldera, swim in hot springs, visit the volcanic island of Nea Kameni and watch the sunset from the water. The ultimate Santorini experience.

Peak season — beautiful weather but extremely crowded and very expensive. Oia's sunset viewpoint draws thousands daily. Only visit if you book 6+ months out.
Sea still warm for swimming, far fewer tourists, lower hotel prices. September is arguably the best month of the year to visit Santorini.
Santorini is one of Greece's most expensive destinations — budget carefully.
Eat at tavernas in Fira's backstreets rather than the caldera-view restaurants — the food is the same quality at half the price. Pyrgos village has excellent local restaurants with almost no tourists. The ATV/quad bike rental (€25–35/day) is the most cost-effective way to explore the whole island.
Santorini Airport (JTR) receives direct flights from most major European cities — direct from London takes around 3.5 hours. In summer, direct flights run from Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan and most European hubs.
Alternatively, take the ferry from Athens (Piraeus port) — high-speed ferries take 5 hours, conventional ferries 7–8 hours overnight. The overnight ferry is a budget-friendly option and the morning arrival into the caldera is spectacular.
From the airport or port, taxis and buses connect to Fira and most villages. A car or ATV is recommended for exploring beyond the main towns.
Day 1 — Arrive & Explore Fira: Settle in, walk the caldera path from Fira to Imerovigli, cocktails watching the sunset. Easy first day.
Day 2 — Caldera Sailing: All-day sailing tour — hot springs, volcanic island, swimming stops and sunset from the water. The highlight of any Santorini trip.
Day 3 — Oia & Wine: Morning in Oia before the cruise ship crowds arrive (before 10am). Afternoon winery tour in Megalochori and Pyrgos. Return to Oia for the famous sunset.
Day 4 — Beaches: Perissa black sand beach in the morning. Red Beach walk (short hike from Akrotiri). Visit the Akrotiri archaeological site (Bronze Age city preserved under volcanic ash). Final sunset dinner in Fira.
