The best time to visit Europe depends on where you're going and what you're after. Summer is hot, expensive and crowded. Winter is cold but cheap and atmospheric. Shoulder season — spring and autumn — hits the sweet spot for most travellers. Here's the full picture, month by month.
✔ Best overall: May, June, September — warm, manageable crowds, good prices
✔ Best value: November–March (excluding Christmas) — cheapest hotels, shortest queues
✔ Avoid if possible: August — peak crowds, peak prices, extreme heat in southern Europe
Month by Month — At a Glance

Cheapest time of year. Cold everywhere. Great for city breaks in Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam. Ski season in the Alps.
February
Still quiet and cold. Venice Carnival is spectacular. Good value flights and hotels across the board.
March
Weather improving. Easter can fall here — book ahead if so. Good for Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon where temperatures are mild.

Arguably the best month across Europe. Long days, 20–25°C, manageable crowds, competitive prices. Book tours early.

Rome: April–June and September–October. July and August are brutally hot (35°C+) and overwhelmingly crowded. Spring and autumn offer the same sights with a fraction of the queues and far more comfortable temperatures. The Vatican's Jubilee Year in 2026 means even higher visitor numbers than usual — book skip-the-line tickets well in advance regardless of when you visit.
Paris: May–June and September–October. Paris is rewarding year-round but these months offer the best combination of weather, manageable crowds and fair prices. July and August see millions of tourists descend while many Parisians flee — the city feels less alive in August. January–March offers the cheapest hotel rates and very short queues at major sights.
Barcelona: May, June and September. The beach is warm from June through September but July and August bring intense heat and enormous crowds on the Barceloneta. May gives you warm weather (22–25°C), uncrowded Sagrada Família queues and hotel rates well below peak. September is arguably even better — sea still warm enough to swim, city breathing again after the summer crush.
Montenegro: June and September are the sweet spots. July and August are peak Adriatic season — busy but the sea is perfect for swimming. June gives you good weather without the crowds. September is arguably the best month: warm sea, thin crowds, lower prices. The boat tours along the Bay of Kotor run April through October.
Amsterdam: April–May for the tulip season at Keukenhof and the city's canal rings looking their finest with spring flowers. September and October offer comfortable temperatures and far fewer tourists than summer. Winter is cold but the Christmas lights and canal atmosphere are beautiful from November onwards.
Budapest: May and September are ideal. Budapest's thermal baths are enjoyable year-round but the outdoor pools at Széchenyi are best in summer. December is magical — Budapest has some of Europe's finest Christmas markets at Vörösmarty Square. Avoid August if possible (hot, crowded, prices spike).

The busiest months (July–August) are also the most expensive. Hotel prices in Rome, Paris and Barcelona can be 40–60% higher in August than in October. Flights follow the same pattern. The sweet spot for most travellers is late May, early June, or September — you get warm weather, long days, and prices 20–30% below the August peak. If your priority is budget above all else, January and February outside of Christmas/New Year offer genuinely exceptional value with hotel rooms in central Rome or Paris often available for under €80/night.
Festivals and Events Worth Planning Around
February: Venice Carnival (spectacular, extremely crowded). April: Easter in Rome (significant for 2026 Jubilee). July: Tour de France (Paris finish, crowds but festive). September: Oktoberfest Munich (late September–early October — book accommodation 6+ months ahead). November/December: Christmas markets across Germany, Austria, France, Hungary — some of Europe's most magical travel experiences.
FAQs
What is the cheapest month to visit Europe?
January and February (outside school holidays) offer the cheapest flights and hotels across virtually all European destinations. Expect cold weather but very short queues and prices 30–50% below summer peak.
What is the best month to avoid crowds?
November and early December (before Christmas markets) have the fewest tourists. January is even quieter but weather is more limiting.
Is August worth it in Europe?
Only for beach-focused trips where the July–August sea temperature is important. For city sightseeing, August is the least enjoyable month — extreme heat in the south, peak crowds everywhere, and peak prices throughout.
Is Europe good in winter?
Absolutely — for city breaks in Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Amsterdam and Paris, winter is atmospheric, cheap and crowd-free. Only the Mediterranean beach destinations genuinely suffer in winter.
