Crete is Greece's largest and most diverse island — ancient Minoan palaces, the longest gorge in Europe, extraordinary beaches and a food culture genuinely distinct from mainland Greece. A week barely scratches the surface.

The 4 Must-See Highlights

🏛️ 1. Knossos Palace

Europe's oldest city — the Bronze Age Minoan palace 3,700 years old. The labyrinth of the Minotaur myth was inspired by these corridors. Combine with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Guided tour essential.

Where to Base Yourself

Chania — most beautiful city, best for western Crete: Balos, Samaria, Elafonisi. Excellent restaurants and old town.
Heraklion — best for eastern Crete: Knossos, Spinalonga, Lasithi Plateau. The museum is extraordinary.
Rethymno — midway, beautiful Venetian old town, good beaches. Excellent compromise for a full-island itinerary.
Elounda — luxury hotel territory on the east coast near Spinalonga island.

Getting Around — Car Essential

Crete is 260km long. A rental car is strongly recommended — mountain villages, Balos, Elafonisi and the south coast all require driving or an organised tour. KTEL buses cover the north coast but are slow.

When to Visit

May–June: Ideal — warm, wildflowers, Samaria Gorge open, manageable crowds.
July–August: Peak, very hot (35°C+). Book 3+ months ahead.
September: Often the finest month — sea warmest (27°C), crowds thin, prices fall.
October: Still warm, very quiet, excellent value.

Cretan Food

Cretan cuisine is the foundation of the Mediterranean diet and widely considered the finest in Greece. Must-eat: dakos, kalitsounia, local lamb, fresh seafood and extraordinary local olive oil. Raki is offered free at the end of every meal.
