The Accursed Mountains (Prokletije or Albanian Alps) are one of Europe's last great wilderness areas — dramatic limestone peaks reaching 2,694m, traditional Highland villages where the ancient Kanun law still shapes daily life, and hiking trails through mountain passes that see a fraction of the visitors of the Alps or Dolomites. This is Albania at its most remote and spectacular.

Quick Facts:
✔ Location: northeastern Albania, on the Montenegro and Kosovo border
✔ Main villages: Theth and Valbona (connected by the Peaks of the Balkans trail)
✔ Best time: June–September — trails open, accommodation available
✔ Getting there: 2–3 hours from Shkodër by car or 4x4 taxi
✔ Difficulty: moderate to strenuous — proper hiking gear essential

Theth — The Mountain Village

Theth is the most visited village in the Albanian Alps — a traditional Highland settlement in a dramatic valley, surrounded by peaks on all sides. The village has a functioning 17th-century kulla (lock-in tower) where men sought refuge under Kanun blood feud law — a striking physical reminder of the Highland code that governed these mountains for centuries. The Grunas Waterfall (30-minute walk from the village) is spectacular. Guesthouses in Theth cost €15–25/night including dinner — extraordinary value for extraordinary scenery.

💡 Local Tip: The jeep track to Theth (2 hours from Shkodër) is rough but passable in a regular car in dry conditions. In wet conditions or for peace of mind, hire a 4x4 taxi from Shkodër (€30–40 one-way). Book guesthouses ahead in July–August — capacity is limited.

Valbona Valley

Valbona is Theth's sister valley on the eastern side of the mountains — equally beautiful, slightly more developed, with a clear glacier-fed river running through it. The base for the cross-border Peaks of the Balkans trail and the starting point for most serious mountain hiking in the Albanian Alps. The ferry from Komani Lake to Fierza (one of Europe's most spectacular boat journeys) provides the most dramatic access to Valbona.

🛶 Komani Lake Ferry — One of Europe's Great Journeys

The 3-hour ferry from Komani to Fierza through the Komani reservoir is one of the most spectacular boat journeys in Europe — sheer limestone walls rising 1,000m from both sides of the lake, narrow gorges, hydroelectric dam infrastructure and complete absence of tourist infrastructure (the ferry exists for the communities it serves, not for tourism). Departs Komani 9am daily. The access to Komani from Shkodër is itself a remarkable mountain road journey (2 hours). This combination — Shkodër → Komani ferry → Valbona → Theth hike → Shkodër — is the finest mountain circuit in Albania.

⛰️ Peaks of the Balkans Trail

A cross-border hiking route through Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro — approximately 192km across 10 days, connecting Theth, Valbona, Rožaje (Montenegro) and Peć (Kosovo). One of the finest multi-day hikes in Europe, almost entirely unknown internationally. Huts and guesthouses throughout. The Albanian section (Theth to Valbona, 2 days) is a spectacular standalone option if you can't commit to the full circuit.

The Kanun — Albanian Highland Law

The Kanun is the ancient code of customary law that governed Albanian Highlands for centuries — covering hospitality (a guest must be fed and protected even at cost to the host), property, marriage and the infamous gjakmarrja (blood vengeance). The kulla (lock-in tower) in Theth is the most visible symbol of the Kanun — families under blood feud could be legally imprisoned in their tower. The Kanun still influences social behaviour in the mountains and understanding it gives these villages an entirely different dimension.

FAQs

Are the Accursed Mountains dangerous?
No — the hiking routes are well-marked and the villages are completely safe. 'Accursed' refers to the difficulty of crossing the peaks in traditional times, not to any current danger.

Do you need a guide for the Accursed Mountains?
For the Theth-Valbona hike (8 hours, clearly marked), a guide is optional but recommended for confidence. For off-trail routes and higher peaks, a guide is strongly recommended.

What gear do you need for hiking in the Albanian Alps?
Proper hiking boots, layers (temperature drops significantly at altitude), rain gear, a map (download offline), sunscreen and sufficient water/food. The trails are genuinely remote — be prepared.
