✔ The Verdict

Both are outstanding. Kraków wins on historical depth — Auschwitz, Wawel Castle and the Kazimierz Jewish Quarter are unmatched. Wrocław wins on architecture variety, atmosphere, Cathedral Island and fewer tourists. Most Poland trips should include both — they're 3 hours apart by train. For a first visit: Kraków. For a second visit or those wanting something different: Wrocław.

Cathedral Island vs Kazimierz

Both cities have extraordinary atmospheric neighbourhoods that are among the best in Poland. Wrocław's Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski) is architecturally unique — Gothic spires, Baroque churches, cobblestones and gas lanterns lit by hand at dusk. It's not like anywhere else in Poland. Kraków's Kazimierz was the medieval Jewish Quarter — now a vibrant restaurant, bar and arts district. Emotionally richer (Holocaust context, synagogues), more commercially developed. Both are unmissable in their respective cities.

Cost Comparison

Both cities use Polish Złoty and both are very cheap by Western European standards. Wrocław is marginally cheaper — tourist-facing inflation is less advanced. A beer in a bar: €2–3.50 in both cities. Mid-range hotel: €65–90/night in both. Restaurant meal: €10–18 in both. The difference is small — perhaps 5–10% cheaper in Wrocław for equivalent quality.
