💰 Currency & Money
Poland uses the Polish Złoty (PLN), not the euro. €1 ≈ 4.2–4.5 PLN. Use bank ATMs (Santander, PKO, mBank) for the best rates — never use the Kantor exchange booths at the airport. Most restaurants, hotels and shops accept Visa and Mastercard. Budget: Wrocław is significantly cheaper than Krakow and far cheaper than Western Europe.

🚌 Getting Around
Wrocław's historic centre is highly walkable — the Rynek to Cathedral Island is 15 minutes on foot; the Rynek to the Centennial Hall is 25 minutes. Trams are excellent, frequent and cheap — buy a 24-hour or 48-hour pass if you plan to use them multiple times. Uber and Bolt work well for further distances. Avoid taxis that don't use apps — overcharging is common.
🍽️ Food Tips
Wrocław's food scene has transformed in recent years. The Old Town has excellent restaurants but prices are higher than local areas. For authentic Polish food at local prices, find a bar mleczny (milk bar) — state-subsidised canteens serving pierogi, bigos, żurek and kotlet schabowy at pre-2010 prices. Nowe Jatki alley (off the Rynek) has some excellent independent restaurants. The University district has good value cafés.
🔐 Safety
Wrocław is very safe for tourists. The usual precautions apply — watch for pickpockets in the Market Square at peak times. The bar scene around the Rynek can be loud and rowdy on Friday and Saturday nights but rarely causes problems for visitors. Cathedral Island is quiet and safe at all hours.
📅 Best Time to Visit
May, June and September are ideal — warm weather, lower crowds than July–August, and the city is beautiful in spring bloom and autumn colours. The Christmas market (late November through December) on the Rynek is one of Poland's finest. July and August are warm but bring more tourists. Winter (December–February) is cold but manageable — Cathedral Island in snow and gas lanterns is extraordinary.
🦆 The Dwarf Tips
Download the official Wrocław Tourist Board app before you arrive — it maps all 300+ dwarfs with photos. Start at the Rynek (30+ dwarfs in and around the square). The most unusual dwarfs are in the University district. A dedicated dwarf morning (3–4 hours) can find 40–60 statues. The "Pater" dwarf outside the University is a favourite.
✈️ Getting There
Wrocław Copernicus Airport (WRO): direct flights from London Stansted and Luton (2.5 hrs), Amsterdam, Dublin, Brussels and multiple German cities (Ryanair, Wizz Air, LOT). Bus 106 to city centre takes 30 min (€1.50). Train to Krakow: 3 hours; Warsaw: 3.5 hours.
