Krakow's two essential day trips — Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka Salt Mine — require advance booking and dedicated time. Plan your itinerary around these first, then fill in the city exploration around them. Both day trips are emotionally significant — allow recovery time.
Day 1 — Old Town & Wawel Castle
Morning: Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) — Europe's largest medieval square. St Mary's Basilica (the famous altarpiece by Veit Stoss is extraordinary — climb the tower for the square view). Cloth Hall market for amber and folk art. Afternoon: Wawel Castle and Cathedral (separate tickets — book ahead in summer). The State Rooms and Crown Treasury are the highlights. Evening: Kazimierz Jewish Quarter for dinner and drinks.
Day 2 — Auschwitz-Birkenau
Full-day certified guided tour departing 8–9am from Krakow. The Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum documents the systematic murder of 1.1 million people. A guide is essential — the site is vast and the historical context complex. Return to Krakow by 5–6pm. Allow a quiet evening.
Day 3 — Wieliczka Salt Mine
Half-day guided tour of the Wieliczka Salt Mine (book online ahead). The underground salt cathedral, salt sculptures and vast underground halls are extraordinary. Return to Krakow by noon. Afternoon: Schindler's Factory Museum (the actual factory, now a superb WWII museum — book timed entry ahead). Evening: Kazimierz bars.
Day 4 — Nowa Huta & More Krakow
Morning: Nowa Huta — Stalin's planned workers' city district, fascinating socialist-realist architecture and a guided tram tour. Afternoon: Czartoryski Museum (Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine — one of the finest paintings in Central Europe). Planty Park circular walk around the Old Town.
Day 5 (Optional) — Zakopane
Bus to Zakopane (1.5 hours) — Poland's mountain resort at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. Gubałówka cable car (extraordinary Tatra panorama), góralski highland culture, oscypek smoked cheese and local vodka. Return to Krakow by evening.
Essential Tips
- ✔ Auschwitz booking: Book a certified guided tour 2–4 weeks ahead in summer — sell out regularly
- ✔ Salt Mine booking: Book Wieliczka online ahead — walk-in queues can be very long
- ✔ Wawel tickets: Different parts of Wawel require separate tickets — plan which sections you want before buying
- ✔ Kazimierz evenings: The Jewish Quarter has Krakow's best restaurants and bars — go here for dinner most evenings
- ✔ Currency: Polish Złoty (PLN) — not euros. ATMs widely available; use bank ATMs not exchange booths
