✔ Best for history: Heraklion — Knossos, the museum, eastern sights
✔ Best value: Rethymno or south coast villages

Chania — Most Beautiful Base
The finest city in Crete — Venetian harbour, beautiful old town, the best restaurants on the island and ideal access to western highlights (Balos, Samaria Gorge, Elafonisi). The old town area has the most atmospheric hotels — converted Venetian mansions from €80/night. The seafront is more expensive but has excellent views.

Less beautiful as a city but the Archaeological Museum alone justifies a stay. Best base for eastern Crete: Knossos (10 min), Spinalonga (1 hour), Lasithi Plateau (45 min). The old city centre around the Venetian walls has good mid-range accommodation. Heraklion airport makes arrival easy.

Halfway between Chania and Heraklion (1 hour from each) — beautiful Venetian old town, a good beach and excellent mid-range accommodation at lower prices than either city. The perfect base for anyone wanting to explore both east and west without changing hotels.

On the sheltered Mirabello Bay on the east coast — some of the finest luxury hotels in Greece (Blue Palace, Elounda Peninsula) and proximity to Spinalonga island. Best for those prioritising luxury, watersports and the eastern experience.

Plakias, Matala and Agia Galini are uncommercialised south coast villages with excellent beaches, local tavernas and accommodation 40-60% cheaper than the north coast. Best for independent travellers with a car who want a genuinely local experience.
