Crete's size means an itinerary matters more here than on any other Greek island. A week allows western and eastern highlights with a car. Pre-book the Samaria Gorge tour, Balos boat trip and Knossos guided entry before anything else.
✔ Samaria Gorge tour — 1–2 days ahead, start 7am
✔ Balos boat trip — fills daily in summer, departs 10:30am
✔ Knossos skip-the-line — long queues without pre-booking
✔ Car rental — essential, book 4–6 weeks ahead in summer
Days 1–2: Chania Base
Arrive Chania airport, head to the old town. Walk the Venetian harbour, explore the Agora market, eat in the Splantzia neighbourhood. Day 2: Day trip to Rethymno (1 hour east) — perfectly preserved Venetian old town, fortress, beautiful beach and excellent local restaurants.
Day 3: Samaria Gorge
Early start — 7am from Chania. 16km walk through Europe's longest gorge, 5–7 hours. End at Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. Boat back to Sfakia then bus to Chania. One of the finest walks in Europe. Go mid-week to avoid weekend crowds.
Day 4: Balos Lagoon
Morning boat from Kissamos harbour (10:30am, 1 hour) to the extraordinary turquoise Balos lagoon. Afternoon swimming and exploring. Evening boat back, dinner in Kissamos or Chania.
Day 5: South Coast & Drive to Heraklion
Drive from Chania south to Plakias beach (excellent swimming, uncommercialised), then east through the Amari Valley to Heraklion. Visit the Archaeological Museum in the afternoon — world's finest Minoan collection.
Day 6: Knossos & Spinalonga
Morning at Knossos Palace at 9am opening — guided tour essential, book ahead. Afternoon: drive to Elounda, boat to Spinalonga — the last active leper colony in Europe (closed 1957), hauntingly beautiful.
Day 7: Lasithi Plateau & Departure
Drive to the Lasithi Plateau — 850m altitude, traditional windmills, Dikteon Cave (birthplace of Zeus in Cretan mythology). Return to Heraklion for afternoon departure.
Rent a Car for Crete
This itinerary is designed around a rental car. Without one, Samaria Gorge access, Balos (car park option) and south coast driving are all impossible independently.

Chania or Heraklion?
Chania for the most beautiful city and western highlights. Heraklion for history and the east. A week allows both: 3 nights Chania, 3 nights Heraklion.
Is a car necessary?
Yes — Crete is 260km long. Buses cover the north coast but mountain villages, Balos and south coast require driving or organised tours.
When should I do the Samaria Gorge?
Weekday, starting no later than 7:30am. Open May–October. June and September are the best months — fewer crowds, better temperatures.
