Crete rewards preparation more than almost any other Greek island — the highlights (Samaria Gorge, Balos boat trips, Knossos guided tours) all benefit significantly from advance booking. Here is everything you need to know.
📅 Best Time to Visit Crete
May and September are the two finest months — warm enough to swim (sea 22-26°C), wildflowers in May, Samaria Gorge open, manageable crowds. July-August is peak season — very hot (35°C+), busiest at beaches, but Samaria Gorge still walkable (go early). October is excellent — still warm, very quiet, exceptional value. Winter (November-March): mild (12-16°C), mountains possibly snowy, many beach facilities closed but cities and culture excellent.
🚗 Getting Around — Car is Essential
Crete is 260km long. A rental car is strongly recommended for anyone wanting to see more than Heraklion and Chania. KTEL buses connect the major north coast cities but mountain villages, Balos, Elafonisi, Preveli and the south coast all require driving or organised tours. Rent from the airports — book 4-6 weeks ahead in summer. International driving licence required for non-EU drivers.

The gorge is 16km long and takes 5-7 hours — start no later than 7:30am from Chania. Wear proper walking shoes (the path is rocky throughout). Carry 2+ litres of water — there are springs along the route but filtered water is safer. The gorge ends at Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea — take the boat to Sfakia then bus back to Chania. Go mid-week to avoid weekend crowds. Open May-October (weather permitting).
🎵 Cretan Food — What to Eat
Cretan food is the foundation of the Mediterranean diet. Must-eat: dakos (barley rusk with tomato and mizithra cheese), kalitsounia (cheese pastries), local lamb, fresh seafood, Cretan olive oil (world-class quality) and honey. Raki is offered free at the end of every meal — accept it. Eat at tavernas off the main tourist streets for 30-50% lower prices and better quality.
🏖️ Beach Tips
Balos — go on a weekday, take the boat (better than the walk in summer heat). Elafonisi — go before 10am on a summer weekend or go mid-week. Preveli — walk down the gorge (40 min) or take the boat from Plakias. South coast — Plakias, Matala and Agia Galini are excellent and far less crowded than north coast resorts.
FAQs
Is Crete safe?
Very safe. Main risks: driving on mountain roads (go slowly), hiking the Samaria Gorge (wear proper shoes), and strong sun. Crime is extremely rare.
What language is spoken in Crete?
Greek. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels and restaurants. In mountain villages, less English — a few words of Greek go a long way.
Is Crete good for families?
Excellent — calm beaches at Ornos/Agios Stefanos, shallow lagoons at Balos and Elafonisi, Knossos for children interested in ancient history. The Samaria Gorge is not suitable for young children.
