Top Things To Do in Ulcinj

🏰 Ulcinj Old Town

The Ulcinj Old Town sits on a rocky promontory directly above the sea — one of the most dramatic positions of any old town in the Adriatic. The town was a pirate stronghold for centuries (Cervantes was allegedly held captive here) and the Venetian and Ottoman fortifications reflect this turbulent history. The old mosque, the ethnographic museum and the views from the walls over the sea are all outstanding. Free to explore.

💡 Local Tip: The small beach directly below the old town walls (Mala Plaža) is the most atmospheric swimming spot in Ulcinj — enclosed by the cliffs with the old town above. Accessible by a steep path from the town gate.

🏖️ Velika Plaža — The Long Beach

13km of almost entirely undeveloped sand beach south of Ulcinj — the longest beach in Montenegro and one of the longest unbroken sandy beaches on the Adriatic. Almost entirely without the beach clubs and sunbed rows of Budva — just open sand, warm water and views toward Albania. Ada Bojana nudist island at the southern end has its own distinctive character. A rental car or bicycle is needed to explore the full length.

🦩 Salt Lakes & Wildlife

The Bojana River delta south of Ulcinj is one of the most important bird sanctuaries in the Balkans — flamingos, pelicans and rare migratory species are regularly spotted at the salt lakes. The Ulcinj Salina (salt works) has been proposed as a nature reserve and the bird life is extraordinary, particularly in spring and autumn.

The Albanian Cultural Connection

Ulcinj has a majority Albanian-speaking population — the only town in Montenegro where this is the case. This gives the town a character unlike anywhere else in Montenegro: the food is slightly different (more Albanian dishes alongside Montenegrin), the mosques are active, the coffee culture has an Albanian flavour and the signs are often bilingual. A fascinating cultural crossover point that makes Ulcinj feel genuinely distinct.

Yes — especially for those who want to escape the resort atmosphere of Budva. The old town drama and Velika Plaža's undeveloped character make it one of Montenegro's most interesting destinations.

Is Ulcinj good for families?
Velika Plaža is excellent for families — shallow gradient, warm water and enormous space. The old town is better suited to adults.

Can you cross into Albania from Ulcinj?
Yes — the Sukobin border crossing (27km south of Ulcinj) gives access to Shkodër in Albania. Straightforward crossing for EU/UK/US citizens. Rental cars need to be declared for cross-border use.
