Perast is the most beautiful village in Montenegro — a perfectly preserved Baroque town of 16 churches and 19 palaces on a narrow strip of land between the mountain and the sea. The view from the water's edge toward the two islands (Our Lady of the Rocks and the island of St George) is one of the finest in the Adriatic. Almost no cars, very few tourists even in peak season, and an atmosphere of elegant faded grandeur unlike anywhere else in the region.

Things To Do in Perast

⛪ Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela)

The extraordinary island church 200m offshore from Perast — built on an artificial island accumulating since 1452, when sailors began throwing rocks and sunken ships into the sea after a reported miracle. The church interior contains 2,500 silver votive plaques left by sailors before voyages, along with remarkable paintings including a work begun by a local woman in 1452 using her own hair for thread (still unfinished, on display in the church). Water taxi from Perast: €5 return. Allow 45 minutes on the island.

💡 Local Tip: The water taxi to Our Lady of the Rocks takes 5 minutes. The boatmen wait on the Perast waterfront — you can see the island clearly from the shore. €5 return, ask any boatman on the promenade.

🏛️ St Nicholas Church & Tower

Perast's largest church has a free-standing bell tower that can be climbed for the finest elevated view of the bay. The view from the top — looking toward the two islands with the mountain backdrop — is the quintessential Kotor Bay image. Entrance to tower: €2. St Nicholas has one of the finest church art collections in Montenegro.

🚶 The Perast Promenade

The promenade along the waterfront from the main square to the residential end of the village takes 15 minutes and passes the finest palaces, old sea captains' houses and waterside gardens. Sit at any of the waterfront cafés and watch the water taxis crossing to Our Lady of the Rocks. One of the most peaceful and beautiful short walks in the Balkans.

🍽️ Eating in Perast

Several excellent restaurants on the waterfront — fish and seafood caught directly from the bay. Konoba Catovica Mlini (3km south of Perast, in a converted mill on a stream) is the finest restaurant in the Kotor Bay area — book ahead. In Perast itself: Restaurant Conte (waterfront, good seafood), and the waterfront cafes for coffee and light meals.
