Lake Ohrid is one of the natural wonders of Europe — an ancient lake of extraordinary clarity shared between North Macedonia and Albania, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. It is estimated to be between 4 and 10 million years old, making it one of the oldest lakes in the world, and it contains species of flora and fauna found nowhere else on earth. Here is everything you need to know.
✔ Age: 4–10 million years — one of the world's oldest lakes
✔ Depth: 294m — one of Europe's deepest
✔ Water clarity: 22-metre visibility
✔ UNESCO: World Heritage Site since 1979 (lake + old town)
✔ Endemic species: 17 endemic fish species + many invertebrates
The Lake
Lake Ohrid sits at 693m altitude in the mountains of the western Balkans — 358 km² of water straddling the border between North Macedonia (eastern shore) and Albania (western shore). The Macedonian shore has the UNESCO-listed town of Ohrid. The Albanian shore has the quieter town of Pogradec and the extraordinary monastery of St Naum (which technically sits on the Macedonian side at the border).
The lake's extraordinary clarity comes from its unique water cycle — 60% of the lake's water comes from underground springs filtering through the karst limestone of the surrounding mountains, rather than surface runoff. This natural filtration produces water of remarkable purity. The 22-metre visibility (and up to 70m in winter) is extraordinary for a freshwater lake of this size.
Swimming in Lake Ohrid
The lake water is warm from late June to September (22–24°C at surface) and the quality is exceptional. The main swimming areas from Ohrid town:
Gradska Plaža (City Beach) — the main public beach, free access, concrete and pebble, lifeguard in summer. 10 minutes walk from the old town.
Old Town Waterfront — rocks and small wooden piers below the old town walls. Free, atmospheric, fewer people than the main beach.
Below St John at Kaneo — rocks accessible via a cliff path from the church. Clear water, quiet. The church above makes it one of the most beautiful swimming spots in Europe.
Private beaches — several along the coast south of the old town. €3–5 for a sunbed.
Boat Tours on Lake Ohrid
The finest way to experience the lake. Several types of tours available from Ohrid harbour:
St Naum boat trip (most popular) — 2 hours south along the Albanian lakeshore to the monastery, with swimming stops. Departs 9–10am, returns 4–5pm. €15–20 per person.
Sunset cruise — 1.5 hours on the lake at golden hour. The light on the church of St John at Kaneo at sunset is extraordinary. €10–15 per person.
Short bay tour — 45-minute circuit of the bay, view of St John at Kaneo from the water. €8–10 per person.
Book directly at the Ohrid harbour or through your guesthouse.
Kayaking and Water Sports
Several operators on the Ohrid waterfront offer kayak rental (€5–8/hour), paddleboard rental (€8–10/hour) and pedalo hire. Kayaking south along the old town cliff face to the Church of St John at Kaneo takes approximately 30 minutes each way and is one of the finest active experiences on the lake. Scuba diving is available for those who want to explore the extraordinary underwater visibility.
The Albanian Side — Lake Ohrid from Pogradec
The western shore of Lake Ohrid belongs to Albania — the town of Pogradec sits on the Albanian shore and offers a completely different perspective on the lake. The drive from Ohrid to Pogradec via the Lin border crossing (1 hour) is spectacular — the road follows the lake shore with Albania visible across the water the entire way. Pogradec itself is less developed than Ohrid and makes an interesting comparison. The crossing is straightforward for EU/UK/US citizens.
