🏨 Budget Accommodation

North Macedonia is one of Europe's most affordable destinations. Ohrid old town guesthouses from €20–35/night — often including breakfast. Skopje mid-range hotels from €35–55. The best value area in Ohrid is the upper old town above the lake — atmospheric, beautiful and very cheap. Prices spike in July–August on the lake front — staying one street back saves 30%.

🍽️ Eating Well on a Budget

Outstanding value. A full traditional meal at a local restaurant costs €6–10. Restaurant meal with wine €12–18. Tavče gravče (bean stew, the national dish), kebapi, ajvar and shopska salad are all cheap, delicious and available everywhere. The Ohrid lake fish — Ohrid trout and Ohrid eel — costs more (€12–18) but is a genuinely local speciality worth trying once.

🚌 Getting Around Cheaply

Buses between Ohrid and Skopje (2.5 hours, €6–8) run regularly. Within Ohrid old town everything is walkable. For Matka Canyon from Skopje, take the city bus to the end of the line (30 minutes, €0.50) then walk or taxi the final 4km. Hire car is not essential in North Macedonia but significantly improves access to villages around the lake.

🎟️ Free and Cheap Things To Do

Ohrid old town streets and the lake promenade are free. The Church of St John at Kaneo (the most photographed view in Macedonia — free exterior). Samuel's Fortress entry €3. The archaeological site at Plaošnik (free). Skopje's Old Bazaar and Čaršija market. Matka Canyon access by foot (the boat tour into the cave is €5–8 extra but worth it).
