North Macedonia is small enough to cover comprehensively in 5–7 days — fly into Skopje, spend time in the capital, then base in Ohrid for the lake and surrounding area before crossing into Albania or returning. Here is the definitive plan.

Quick Facts:
✔ Best entry: Skopje International Airport (SKP)
✔ Best exit: Ohrid → Albania (Lake Ohrid border) or fly from Skopje
✔ Getting around: bus Skopje–Ohrid (3hrs, €8), car for flexibility
✔ Don't miss: St John at Kaneo church, St Naum boat trip, Matka Canyon
✔ Book: lake boat tours 1–2 days ahead in July–August

5-Day North Macedonia Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Skopje

Arrive at Skopje Airport (SKP). Taxi to city centre (€10–15, 25 minutes). Afternoon: walk through the Čaršija (Ottoman bazaar) — the 15th-century market of copper workshops, mosques and teahouses. Cross the Stone Bridge to the neoclassical city centre — stand on the bridge to see both halves of Skopje simultaneously. Evening: dinner in the old town, local tavče gravče and Skopsko beer.

Day 2: Skopje — Matka Canyon & City

Morning: Matka Canyon (15km west, taxi €10) — hire a boat through the gorge (€5, 30 minutes), swim in the canyon, walk the lakeside trails. Return for afternoon in the Čaršija — Mustafa Pasha Mosque (1492), Bit Pazar fresh market, the Bezisten covered market. Evening: Kale Fortress at sunset for the finest view over the city.

Day 3: Travel to Ohrid + Old Town Exploration

Bus from Skopje to Ohrid (3 hours, departs Skopje bus station, €8–10). Check in to old town accommodation. Afternoon: walk the cobblestone streets of the old town — Tsar Samuel's Fortress at the top, the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid (2nd century BC), the old bazaar below. Swim from the Gradska Plaža beach. Dinner at a lakeside restaurant — Ohrid trout is non-negotiable.

Day 4: Ohrid Old Town & Lake Boat Tour

Morning: Church of St John at Kaneo — the finest Byzantine church on the lake, perched above the water. Best photographed from below on the lake. Afternoon: full lake boat tour including St Naum Monastery at the Albanian border (2 hours south) and swimming stops in the clearest lake water in Europe. Return to Ohrid at sunset — watch the light change on the lake from the old town waterfront.

Day 5: St Naum & Onward

Final morning at Ohrid — early swim, last coffee in the old bazaar. Option A: continue to Albania via the Lin border crossing on the lake (Pogradec is 1 hour from Ohrid — see our Albania Travel Guide). Option B: bus back to Skopje (3 hours) for departure flight. Option C: add 1–2 days in Bitola (1.5 hours south) — completely tourist-free Macedonian market town.

7-Day Itinerary — Extended

Days 1–2 as above in Skopje. Days 3–5 in Ohrid as above. Day 6: Bitola day trip (1.5 hours south of Ohrid) — the beautiful Ottoman market town of Bitola, with the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis (major Roman city) just outside. Day 7: cross into Albania at the Lin border and continue to Pogradec or Tirana, or return to Skopje.

💡 Local Tip: The boat from Ohrid to St Naum (2 hours each way along the Albanian-North Macedonian lake border) is the finest journey in North Macedonia. The mountains of Albania are reflected in the clear lake water, small villages line the shore and the monastery garden at the end has the most tranquil setting in the country. Boats depart Ohrid harbour from 9am.
