North Macedonia is genuinely one of Europe's most underrated countries — Lake Ohrid is one of Europe's oldest and most beautiful lakes, Skopje is the most surreal capital city on the continent, and the whole country is extraordinarily affordable. Here are the experiences worth prioritising.
Lake Ohrid
One of Europe's oldest lakes (estimated 3 million years old), remarkably clear water (visibility to 22m+), UNESCO-protected and surrounded by Byzantine churches on rocky hillsides. The most beautiful lake in the Balkans. Swimming, boat trips, kayaking and simply sitting at a waterfront café watching the light change across the water.
💡 Sunrise from the old town viewpoints above the lake — extraordinary light on the water. Sunset boat trips are available from the Ohrid waterfront. Swim from the town beaches or the quieter village beaches south along the lake shore.
Book Now →Church of St John at Kaneo
The most photographed view in North Macedonia — a 13th-century Byzantine church perched on a rocky promontory above Lake Ohrid, surrounded by the Julian Alps beyond the lake. The small church interior has original medieval frescoes. Free to visit, free to enter.
💡 Visit in the morning for the best light (the church faces east). The walk from Ohrid old town takes 20 minutes along the lake shore path — one of the finest short walks in the Balkans.
Book Now →Samuel's Fortress
The 10th-century fortress of Tsar Samuel of the First Bulgarian Empire — perched above Ohrid old town with extraordinary panoramic views of the lake and the Albanian mountains beyond. Well-preserved walls and towers. The walk up from the old town takes 20 minutes through the archaeological site.
💡 Go late afternoon for the best light on the lake and the mountains. The fortress walls are intact enough to walk along for the finest views.
Book Now →Matka Canyon
15km west of Skopje — a dramatic limestone gorge carved by the Treska River, with medieval monasteries perched on the cliffs, a cave accessible by boat (Vrelo Cave, with Europe's deepest underwater lake), kayaking and walking trails. One of North Macedonia's finest natural attractions and easily done as a half-day from Skopje.
💡 The boat tour into the Vrelo Cave (€5) is the highlight — book at the canyon restaurant on arrival. Kayak hire available. Take the local Skopje bus (30 minutes) rather than a taxi for the most affordable access.
Book Now →Skopje Old Bazaar (Čaršija)
One of the largest and most authentic Ottoman bazaars in the Balkans outside Istanbul — hans (caravanserais), mosques, artisan workshops, copper merchants and traditional restaurants in a largely intact Ottoman-era layout. Immediately adjacent to the controversial Skopje 2014 neoclassical monuments — the contrast between the two is one of the most fascinating urban juxtapositions in Europe.
💡 The bazaar is completely free to wander. Eat lunch at a traditional aščinica (traditional Balkan restaurant) in the bazaar rather than the tourist restaurants near the main square — better food at 40–50% lower prices.
Book Now →Ohrid Old Town
The medieval old town above Lake Ohrid — the Ancient Theatre (3rd century BCE, still used for the Ohrid Summer Festival), the Plaošnik archaeological site (Byzantine basilica ruins and a reconstructed monastery), the Samuel's Fortress and dozens of Byzantine churches scattered through cobbled streets. One of the most concentrated collections of Byzantine architecture in the Balkans.
💡 Allow a full day for the old town. The most rewarding approach: enter through the Gornji Saraj gate, walk through the archaeological area to the theatre, then down to the Church of St John at Kaneo and back along the lake shore path.
