Europe's #1 destination — UNESCO Baroque Vilnius, Trakai Castle & the Curonian Spit
🔥 Check Top Tours Now 🏨 Compare Hotel PricesLithuania is the largest of the three Baltic states, sitting on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, bordered by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east, Poland and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad to the south. Its capital Vilnius sits in the southeast of the country, just 30km from the Belarusian border — a geographic position that has given the city a uniquely layered history.
Despite being an EU and Schengen member since 2004, Lithuania remains strikingly undervisited compared to its Western European neighbours. That is rapidly changing — Lonely Planet named Lithuania the #1 destination in Europe for 2026, and visitor numbers are climbing 21% year on year.
💡 Quick Lithuania facts:
Lithuania is the most compelling destination in Europe that most travellers haven't seriously considered. Vilnius has one of the largest surviving Baroque old towns in Europe — bigger than Prague's, less visited than Krakow's, and arguably more beautiful than either. The medieval lanes, amber-coloured churches, bohemian Užupis district and hilltop Gediminas Tower create a city that consistently astonishes visitors who arrive with modest expectations.
Beyond Vilnius, Lithuania offers Trakai Island Castle — a perfectly preserved red-brick fortress on a lake — the haunting Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai, and the Curonian Spit: a UNESCO-listed sand dune peninsula on the Baltic coast that feels like nothing else in Europe.
The prices are extraordinary. Lithuania is one of the cheapest EU countries for visitors — a full day eating, drinking and sightseeing in Vilnius costs €30–40. A mid-range hotel in the Old Town runs €60–80/night. Restaurant meals with local beer come to €10–15 per person.
A stunning red-brick medieval castle on an island in Lake Galvė, 28km from Vilnius. One of the most photogenic sights in the Baltics — easy half-day trip from the capital.

Alternatively, Lithuania is easy to reach overland from Poland via bus or train (Warsaw to Vilnius takes around 9 hours by train), or as part of a Baltic road trip from Riga or Tallinn.
