Is Lithuania Worth Visiting?

Honest 2026 verdict — Europe's most surprising destination

🔥 Book Tours 🏠 Compare Hotels
The Verdict

Absolutely — one of the most rewarding European city breaks available in 2026. Vilnius is genuinely extraordinary: a UNESCO Baroque old town bigger than Prague's, remarkably affordable, safe and walkable. Trakai, the Hill of Crosses and the Curonian Spit push Lithuania from a city break into a full destination. Lonely Planet named it the #1 destination in Europe for 2026. Visit before everyone else catches on.

Reasons to Visit Lithuania

  • Vilnius Old Town is extraordinary — one of the largest surviving Baroque centres in Europe, UNESCO-listed and genuinely beautiful in a way that surprises almost every visitor.
  • Trakai Island Castle — one of the most photogenic sights in northern Europe. As good as it looks in photos.
  • The Hill of Crosses — among the most moving and extraordinary places in Europe. Nothing else looks or feels like it.
  • Very affordable — one of the cheapest EU member states. A full day of eating, drinking and sightseeing in Vilnius costs 30-40 EUR.
  • Excellent food and craft beer — hearty Lithuanian cuisine and a world-class craft beer scene that costs a fraction of Western European equivalents.
  • Not overrun yet — far quieter than Prague, Krakow or Budapest. Visit now while groups are small and prices are low.
  • Lonely Planet #1 in Europe for 2026 — visitor numbers rising 21% year on year.

Honest Drawbacks

  • Fewer direct flights — Vilnius is not as well-served as Western European capitals. From some UK regional airports you need a connection via Warsaw or Frankfurt.
  • Cold winters — November through March can be genuinely cold (-10°C possible). Visit May-September for the best weather.
  • Compact city — Vilnius itself is small. For longer trips you need a rental car to explore beyond the capital.
  • Limited beach season — the Baltic coast is only warm enough for swimming July-August.

Who Should Visit Lithuania?

Lithuania is ideal for: European city break travellers looking for somewhere genuinely different and underpriced; history and architecture enthusiasts (the Baroque, Soviet and Jewish history of Vilnius is extraordinary); budget-conscious travellers who want quality without Western European prices; and anyone who has done Prague, Krakow and Budapest and wants the next level.

Is Lithuania underrated?
Significantly. Most travellers who visit say they were completely unprepared for how good Vilnius is. It consistently exceeds expectations.

Is Lithuania safe?
Yes — Lithuania is one of the safest countries in Eastern Europe and consistently ranks among the safest EU capitals. Standard precautions are sufficient.

How does Vilnius compare to Riga and Tallinn?
All three Baltic capitals are excellent. Vilnius has the largest and most impressive old town, lower prices and arguably the best food scene. If you can only visit one Baltic capital, Vilnius is the current standout.
