Tbilisi's different neighbourhoods offer very different experiences. Here is the honest guide to where to stay in 2026.

Old Tbilisi (Kala) — Most Atmospheric

The ancient core of the city — wooden balconied houses, sulfur bath domes, cobblestone alleys and the fortress on the cliffs above. Staying here puts the city's most extraordinary streets on your doorstep. Guesthouses and small boutique hotels in renovated traditional houses are the best accommodation option. Prices are moderate.

Best for: First-time visitors, atmosphere seekers, anyone who wants to step out into medieval Georgia.   Drawback: The streets are steep and uneven — difficult with heavy luggage and not ideal for limited mobility.

Rustaveli Avenue — Most Central & Convenient

The grand 19th-century boulevard that is the backbone of modern Tbilisi — hotels here are a 15-minute walk from Old Tbilisi and have excellent transport connections. More business-hotel in character but very convenient. Several of Tbilisi's finest hotels are on or near Rustaveli.

Best for: Business travellers, those wanting easy navigation and modern amenities.   Drawback: Less atmospheric than Old Tbilisi.

Vera & Vake — Most Comfortable & Local

The residential districts west of Rustaveli — more lived-in, local neighbourhood feel, excellent restaurants and cafés, 15–20 minutes from Old Tbilisi on foot or a short taxi. Some of Tbilisi's best independent guesthouses and boutique hotels are in Vera. A good choice for longer stays.

Best for: Longer stays, travellers who want local neighbourhood life, good food and wine scene on the doorstep.   Drawback: Further from Old Tbilisi than central options.
