Georgia at a Glance

Georgia is a compact country — you can drive from the Turkish border to the Russian border in under 5 hours. But the density of extraordinary experiences is remarkable: ancient cave cities, mountain monasteries at 2,000m altitude, one of the world's oldest wine regions and a capital city unlike anywhere else in Europe. This itinerary covers the best of it over 7–10 days.

Quick Facts:
✔ Currency: Georgian Lari (GEL) — €1 ≈ 3 GEL. Cards widely accepted in Tbilisi
✔ Transport: Marshrutkas (shared minibuses) between cities — cheap and reliable
✔ Language: Georgian (Mkhedruli script) — English spoken in tourist areas
✔ Visa: Free for EU, UK, US, Australian passports (up to 365 days)
✔ Best season: April–June and September–October

Days 1–3: Tbilisi

Arrive at Tbilisi International Airport (TBS). Day 1: Narikala Fortress via cable car from Rike Park — extraordinary views over the Mtkvari river gorge. Walk down through the old town to Abanotubani (sulphur bath district). Book a private sulphur bath for 1.5 hours (€20–25 including scrub). Evening: Shardeni Street wine bars — try a qvevri amber wine. Day 2: Dry Bridge flea market (if Sunday), Metekhi Church above the river, Georgian National Museum. Afternoon: Rustaveli Avenue, the Opera House. Evening: Fabrika creative complex for drinks and dinner. Day 3: Day trip to Mtskheta — Georgia's ancient capital, 20 minutes by marshrutka (€0.50). Jvari monastery above the two-river confluence and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century, one of the finest medieval buildings in the Caucasus).

💡 Tbilisi tip: Use the Yandex Go app for taxis — avoid street taxis which overcharge tourists. The Fabrika hostel complex is the social hub of Tbilisi travel — excellent even if you're not staying there.

Day 4: Kazbegi — The Non-Negotiable Day Trip

The day trip that defines Georgia for most visitors. Marshrutka from Didube bus station in Tbilisi (€3, 3 hours) up the Georgian Military Highway through the dramatic Dariali Gorge. At Kazbegi (Stepantsminda): hike 1.5 hours up to Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170m — a medieval Orthodox church perched on a clifftop with 5,047m Mount Kazbek rising behind it, one of Europe's most extraordinary landscapes. Alternatively, hire a 4WD taxi from the village (€10–15 return). Overnight in Kazbegi or return to Tbilisi.

💡 Kazbegi tip: The hike to Gergeti takes 1.5 hours each way with significant elevation gain. Start early — the mountain views are clearest before midday. Take water and layers; even in summer it can be cold at 2,170m.

Days 5–6: Kakheti Wine Region

Drive or marshrutka 2 hours east of Tbilisi to Georgia's wine heartland — the Alazani Valley. Day 5: Visit 2–3 wine estates — Twins Wine House (outstanding qvevri wines, good tours), Kindzmarauli Marani or Château Mukhrani. Lunch at a family winery with homemade food and wine. Afternoon: Tsinandali estate and Alexander Chavchavadze house-museum. Overnight in Telavi (Kakheti's main town) or Sighnaghi — a beautifully restored hilltop town with panoramic Alazani Valley views. Day 6: Explore Sighnaghi's cobblestoned streets and walls, Bodbe Monastery (St Nino's shrine — important pilgrimage site), the Alazani Valley viewpoints. Return to Tbilisi in the evening.

Days 7–8: Vardzia & Borjomi (Optional Extension)

Drive or take a marshrutka south from Tbilisi toward Aspindza (5 hours). Stop at Borjomi — Georgia's famous mineral water town, a beautiful spa resort in a forested gorge with the Romanov summer palace. Continue to Vardzia: a 12th-century cave monastery carved into a volcanic cliff face — 3,000 rooms cut across 13 stories of rock, with frescoes in the main church and a functioning monastery community at the base. One of the most extraordinary man-made places in Europe. Return to Tbilisi via Akhaltsikhe (the 9th-century Rabati Castle is excellent).

Days 9–10: Uplistsikhe & Departure (Optional)

Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-carved town 80km west of Tbilisi — inhabited from the early Iron Age to the 13th century, with carved halls, a theatre, a pharmacy and a wine cellar cut from the rock. Easy half-day trip on the way to or from the airport. Return to Tbilisi for final evening — a proper Georgian supra feast if you haven't had one yet.

FAQs

How many days do you need in Georgia?
7 days covers Tbilisi (3 nights), Kazbegi (1 day), Kakheti (2 nights) and a day around Mtskheta. 10 days adds Vardzia and Borjomi — the ideal length for a first Georgia trip.

Is a rental car necessary in Georgia?
Not essential — marshrutkas (shared minibuses) connect all main destinations cheaply. But a rental car opens up Vardzia, remote Kakheti wine estates and mountain villages significantly. Roads are generally good on main routes.

What is the best order to visit Georgia?
Tbilisi first (best-connected, gives orientation), then Kazbegi day trip, then Kakheti wine region. Vardzia and the south can be added as an extension either before or after Kakheti.

Is Georgia on the way to anywhere else?
Yes — excellent connections to Armenia (3 hours by bus from Tbilisi), Azerbaijan (overnight bus to Baku) and Turkey (overnight bus to Istanbul via Batumi). Many travellers do a South Caucasus circuit: Tbilisi → Yerevan (Armenia) → return via different route.
