The Classic 7-Day Norway Itinerary

This itinerary covers the essential Norway for first-time visitors — world-class Oslo, the iconic Bergensbanen train journey, beautiful Bergen and the spectacular UNESCO fjords. It can be done mostly by public transport, though renting a car from Day 5 is recommended for maximum fjord flexibility.

Itinerary at a glance:
Days 1-2 — Oslo
Day 3 — Bergensbanen train to Bergen
Day 4 — Bergen
Days 5-6 — Fjords (Flåm, Nærøyfjord, Geirangerfjord)
Day 7 — Return journey

Days 1-2 — Oslo

Arrive Oslo Gardermoen and take the Flytoget Airport Express (20 minutes, 220 NOK) to the city centre. Day 1: the Opera House (walk on the roof for free), Aker Brygge waterfront, the Munch Museum and the Astrup Fearnley gallery. Evening dinner in Grünerløkka neighbourhood.

Day 2: morning at the Viking Age Museum on Bygdøy (allow 2 hours — these are the most complete Viking ships ever found), afternoon at Vigeland Sculpture Park (free). Optional: take the T-bane to Holmenkollen Ski Jump for panoramic views over Oslo and the fjord.

Day 3 — Bergensbanen to Bergen

The Oslo-Bergen railway (Bergensbanen) is widely considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in Europe — 7 hours crossing the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, through tunnels, over bridges and past frozen lakes. Book in advance (from 299 NOK one-way). Arrive Bergen in late afternoon. Walk the Bryggen Wharf and have dinner in Fisketorget (Fish Market).

Day 4 — Bergen

Bergen is Norway's second city — the gateway to the fjords, with a UNESCO-listed wooden wharf (Bryggen), seven surrounding mountains and a compact, walkable centre. Morning: take the Fløibanen funicular to Mount Fløyen for panoramic views over the city, islands and fjords. Afternoon: Bryggen Museum, Hanseatic Museum and a walk through the old alleyways. Bergen has excellent seafood restaurants — splurge on a fish dinner here.

Days 5-6 — Sognefjord and the UNESCO Fjords

Take the morning train to Myrdal, then the famous Flåm Railway down to Flåm — one of the world's steepest railway lines, descending 863 metres through mountain scenery and waterfalls. From Flåm, take the fjord cruise through Nærøyfjord — the narrowest UNESCO World Heritage fjord, with cliffs rising 1,700 metres from the water. Overnight in Flåm or Gudvangen.

Day 6: drive or ferry toward Geirangerfjord — the most dramatic fjord in Norway. The Seven Sisters waterfall, the Suitor waterfall opposite, and the sheer scale of the fjord walls make Geirangerfjord the defining Norwegian landscape. Overnight in Geiranger village.

Day 7 — Return

Drive or take a combination of ferry, bus and train back to Bergen or Oslo for your departure flight. If flying from Bergen, the journey takes 2-3 hours by car. If flying from Oslo, allow 5-6 hours total travel.

Practical notes:
Book Bergensbanen and Flåm Railway tickets in advance at nsb.no — popular trains sell out
Fjord cruises: book at visitflam.com or through your hotel
Car rental from Bergen or Flåm makes Days 5-7 significantly easier
Norway is expensive — budget 150-200 EUR/day minimum for mid-range travel

Can I do Norway in 7 days?
7 days covers the classic Oslo-Bergen-Fjords route well. For Northern Lights (Tromsø, Lofoten) or a deeper fjord exploration, plan 10-14 days.

What is the best way to see the fjords?
Combination of boat cruise (for the water-level perspective), train (Flåm Railway for the mountain descent) and driving (for flexibility and hidden viewpoints). Using all three gives the most complete fjord experience.
