Very cold (-5 to 2°C in Oslo, much colder in the north). Best Northern Lights month. Ski season in full swing. Very cheap prices in cities.
Similar to January — excellent for Northern Lights and skiing. Days getting longer. Tromsø and Lofoten Islands are magical in winter light.
Ski season peak. Days noticeably longer. Northern Lights still possible in the far north. Good value. Some fjord ferries on reduced schedule.
Ski season ending (4-10°C in Oslo). Easter is a busy and expensive period — book ahead. Some mountain roads still closed. Good for Oslo.
15-18°C, wildflowers in the fjords, long days. National Day (May 17) is a major celebration. Everything opening. Fewer tourists than summer. One of the best months.
18-22°C, midnight sun above the Arctic Circle. Fjords lush and beautiful. Crowds building but not yet peak. Midsummer festivities (Sankthans).
Warmest month (20-24°C). All attractions open, midnight sun at maximum. Most expensive and most crowded. Geirangerfjord can feel busy. Book far ahead.
Still warm and busy. Excellent for outdoor activities. Crowds and prices remain high. Book all accommodation and transport well in advance.
Autumn colours, crowds thinning (14-18°C), prices dropping. First Northern Lights possible in far north. Excellent value and very beautiful.
Cooling (5-12°C). Northern Lights season starting in Tromsø and Lofoten. Some fjord attractions closing. Good value. Dramatic autumn colours remaining.
Cold and dark. Very low prices. Northern Lights in the north. Oslo festive season beginning. Not ideal for fjords — many outdoor attractions closed.
Oslo Christmas markets are excellent. Northern Lights peak. Expensive around Christmas and New Year. Very atmospheric.
When is the best time to see the fjords?
May-June for wildflowers, fewer crowds and excellent weather. July-August for the warmest temperatures and longest days. September for autumn colours and lower prices.
When is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Norway?
October through March offers the best chance — the sky needs to be dark. Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands are the most accessible bases. February is statistically the best month for clear skies.
When is the midnight sun in Norway?
Above the Arctic Circle (Tromsø, Svalbard, Lofoten), the sun does not set from approximately late May to late July. In Tromsø, midnight sun runs from May 20 to July 22.
Is Norway good in winter?
Yes for Northern Lights, skiing and atmospheric Arctic experiences. Not recommended for fjord touring — many ferries and mountain roads are on reduced schedules or closed November-April.
