From UNESCO fjords to the Northern Lights — Norway at its finest

1. Cruise the Norwegian Fjords

The Norwegian fjords are one of the world's great natural spectacles — Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with sheer cliff walls rising hundreds of metres from mirror-flat water, waterfalls cascading from peaks and tiny farms clinging to ledges. Nothing in Western Europe compares. Best experienced by boat cruise, kayak or hiking trail.

2. The Flåm Railway

One of the world's most scenic railway journeys — the Flåm Railway descends 863 metres from the mountain plateau at Myrdal down to the village of Flåm on Aurlandsfjord. Waterfalls, tunnels, sheer drops and dramatic mountain scenery in just 20km of track. A must on any Norway itinerary.

3. Chase the Northern Lights

Tromsø is the most accessible Arctic city in Europe for Northern Lights — regular direct flights from Oslo, a well-developed tourism infrastructure, and a high frequency of clear Aurora nights October-March. The Lofoten Islands offer the same phenomenon with Norway's most dramatic mountain-meets-sea scenery as a backdrop.

4. The Lofoten Islands

An archipelago above the Arctic Circle with peaks rising sheer from the sea, traditional red fishing huts (rorbuer), world-class hiking and some of Norway's best beaches. Stunning in summer under the midnight sun; magical in winter under the Northern Lights. One of Europe's most photogenic landscapes.

5. Viking Ship Museum, Oslo

Three extraordinarily preserved Viking ships from the 9th century, along with burial treasures and artefacts. The ships — Oseberg, Gokstad and Tune — are the best-preserved Viking vessels in existence. One of the most impressive museum experiences in Scandinavia.

6. The Bergensbanen Train Journey

The Oslo-Bergen railway is one of Europe's greatest train journeys — 7 hours crossing the Hardangervidda mountain plateau through tunnels, across bridges and past frozen lakes at over 1,200 metres altitude. Even in the worst weather, the scenery is extraordinary. Book a window seat in advance.

7. Vigeland Sculpture Park, Oslo

The world's largest sculpture installation by a single artist — 212 bronze and granite sculptures by Gustav Vigeland in Frognerparken, depicting the human life cycle from birth to death. Free to enter, endlessly fascinating, surprisingly moving. Allow 90 minutes to 2 hours.

8. Trolltunga and Norway's Great Hikes

Norway has some of the finest hiking in Europe. Trolltunga (the "Troll's Tongue" rock formation 700 metres above Lake Ringedalsvatnet) is one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the continent — a demanding full-day hike that rewards enormously. Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and Kjeragbolten are also world-famous hikes with extraordinary views over the fjords.
