Dubrovnik is compact — 2 days covers the city thoroughly, 3–4 days allows island day trips and the Kotor or Mostar excursions. Pre-booking is essential in summer: the city walls have timed entry, tours fill up and the best restaurants require reservations.

Day 1 — City Walls & Old Town

Walk the 2km city walls circuit at 8am (before cruise ship crowds arrive at 10am). The view of terracotta rooftops and Adriatic below is extraordinary from every angle. Then walk Stradun (the main street), visit the Franciscan Monastery (14th-century pharmacy — still operating) and the Dominican Monastery at the east end. Late afternoon: cable car to Mount Srđ for the panoramic city view. Evening dinner at a restaurant terrace — book ahead in summer.

Day 2 — Lokrum Island & Kayaking

Morning by ferry to Lokrum Island (10 minutes, every 30 minutes) — peacocks, botanical gardens, a ruined monastery and quiet swimming coves. Very different from the crowded old town. Return for lunch. Afternoon: sea kayaking tour around the base of the city walls — the best way to appreciate the scale of the fortifications from the water, with swimming stops. Book the kayak tour a day ahead in season.

Day 3 — Elaphiti Islands or Kotor Day Trip

Choose between two outstanding day trips. Option A: Full-day Elaphiti Islands boat cruise (Koločep, Lopud and Šipan — island landings, Šunj beach, local wine and swimming). Option B: Drive or join a guided tour to Kotor, Montenegro — 2.5 hours each way but one of the finest medieval cities in the Adriatic, with the bonus stop at Perast and the island church. Both are genuinely excellent.

Day 4 (Optional) — Mostar & Wine

A full-day guided tour northwest to Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) — the extraordinary Stari Most bridge, the Ottoman bazaar and a deeply moving post-war city. Return via the Pelješac Peninsula for a wine tasting stop at one of Croatia's finest wine regions (Dingač). A long but immensely rewarding day.

Essential Dubrovnik Tips

  • City walls timing: Go at 8am opening — the walls are magical at this time and manageable. By 10am they become very crowded
  • Cruise ships: The old town is overwhelming midday in July–August when cruise passengers disembark — plan sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon
  • Booking essential: City walls tours, kayaking and island cruises all require advance booking in summer — do this before you arrive
  • Taxis: Use official taxis or Uber — unofficial drivers at the port charge inflated rates
  • Water: Carry a refillable bottle — Dubrovnik's drinking water is safe and the old town has public fountains
