🚂 Train (Recommended)

⏱ 2–2.5 hours  |  💶 €5–8 one way  |  🕐 Hourly

The train is the best option — cheap, very comfortable and scenic. The Sofia–Plovdiv line is one of Bulgaria's best-maintained intercity routes, with modern BDZ Intercity trains running approximately every 1–1.5 hours throughout the day. Departs from Sofia Central Station (Sofia Tsentralna Gara). The journey through the Thracian plain with mountain views is genuinely pleasant.

💡 Tip: Buy tickets at Sofia Central Station or online at bdz.bg. Book the IC (Intercity) train rather than the slower regional services — faster, more comfortable, same price. The 8–9am departure gets you to Plovdiv by 10.30am — perfect for a morning in the old town.

🚌 Bus

⏱ 2–2.5 hours  |  💶 €6–9 one way  |  🕐 Frequent

Buses run roughly every 30–60 minutes from Sofia Central Bus Station (next to the train station) and several private operators. Journey time is similar to the train. Union-Ivkoni and Etap-Group are the main operators — comfortable coaches with air conditioning. Slightly cheaper than the train but less scenic.

💡 Tip: The bus station and train station are adjacent in Sofia — easy to compare departure times on arrival. Bus tickets can be bought at the station; some operators also sell online.

🚗 Car

⏱ 1.5–2 hours  |  💶 From €30/day  |  🕐 Complete freedom

Driving Sofia to Plovdiv follows the A1 motorway — one of Bulgaria's best roads. The journey is 130km and straightforward. A rental car is especially useful if you plan to visit Thracian Valley wine estates near Plovdiv or the Bachkovo Monastery (45 minutes south of Plovdiv) — neither is easy without your own transport.

💡 Tip: If visiting Plovdiv and planning wine estate tours or day trips to the Rhodope Mountains, a rental car is strongly recommended. Pick up in Sofia, return in Plovdiv (or keep it for the coast/Veliko Tarnovo). One-way rentals are usually easy to arrange.

🚕 Private Transfer

⏱ 1.5 hours  |  💶 €50–80 per vehicle  |  🕐 Book ahead

Door-to-door transfers between Sofia and Plovdiv — convenient for those with lots of luggage or travelling in groups. Several operators offer this route. Per-person cost for a group of 3–4 becomes competitive with bus tickets.

💡 Tip: Useful for early morning departures before public transport starts or late arrivals. Book 24 hours ahead at minimum.

✔ Our Recommendation

Take the IC train — it's cheap (€5–7), frequent, comfortable and leaves you right in Plovdiv city centre a short walk or taxi from the old town. Buy the ticket at Sofia Central Station on the day or book online at bdz.bg. If you're planning wine estate visits or Rhodope Mountain day trips from Plovdiv, pick up a rental car in Sofia instead.

What to Do in Sofia Before You Leave

If you're staying 2 nights in Sofia first (recommended), make sure you've done: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Serdica Roman ruins under the metro and — most importantly — the Rila Monastery day trip (2 hours south of Sofia, unmissable). → Sofia Travel Guide

What to Do in Plovdiv on Arrival

Drop your bags and head straight to the old town (Stariyat Grad) — the Roman Amphitheatre, the National Revival mansions and the Kapana arts district are all within 15 minutes' walk of the train station. The best evening introduction to Plovdiv is a coffee in Kapana followed by a rooftop bar with views over the amphitheatre. → Plovdiv Travel Guide
