Slovenia rewards a minimum of 4 days — less and you'll feel rushed between the main sights. A week allows you to go deeper into the Soča Valley and Triglav National Park. A car is strongly recommended for everything beyond Ljubljana and Bled.
Day 1 — Ljubljana
Arrive in Ljubljana and explore the car-free old town on foot — the triple bridge (Tromostovje), the Central Market (Pogačarjev trg), the dragon bridge and the riverside café culture along the Ljubljanica. Afternoon: cable car or walk up to Ljubljana Castle for the city panorama. Evening dinner in the old town — Slovenia's capital has an excellent and affordable restaurant scene.
Day 2 — Lake Bled
Drive 55km to Lake Bled (1 hour). Rent a rowing pletna boat to the island church (Assumption of Mary) — ring the wishing bell. Walk up to Bled Castle (rocky cliff above the lake) for the classic panoramic view. Swim in the lake in summer. Taste kremna rezina (the famous Bled cream cake) at the Park Hotel. Return to Ljubljana or stay lakeside.
Day 3 — Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle
Drive south to Postojna Cave (60km from Ljubljana). The 1.5-hour guided tour includes the cave train, spectacular stalactite halls and the olm salamander exhibit. Combine with Predjama Castle (10km away) — the most dramatic castle setting in Europe, built into a 123m cliff face. Return to Ljubljana by evening.
Day 4 — Vintgar Gorge & Lake Bohinj
Morning: Vintgar Gorge (4km from Bled, open May–October) — 1.6km wooden boardwalk above turquoise river gorge, waterfalls throughout. Afternoon: drive to Lake Bohinj (26km from Bled) — Slovenia's largest lake, wilder and less visited than Bled. Church of St John the Baptist on the shore has extraordinary Byzantine-style frescoes. Evening at Bohinj or return to Ljubljana.
Days 5–7 — Soča Valley (Optional Extension)
Drive the Vršič Pass (Slovenia's highest mountain road — 50 hairpin bends, open June–October) into the Soča Valley. Bovec for kayaking, rafting and the extraordinary turquoise river. Kobarid (WWI Isonzo Front museum — outstanding). Triglav National Park hiking. The Soča Valley is Slovenia's most spectacular area and deserves at least 2 nights.

Is 4 days enough for Slovenia?
4 days covers Ljubljana, Bled, Postojna and a gorge or lake excursion. Enough for a very satisfying trip.
Can I visit Slovenia without a car?
Ljubljana and Bled are accessible by bus and train. Beyond that, public transport is very limited — a car opens up the caves, Soča Valley and Triglav National Park.
What is the best season to visit Slovenia?
May–June and September–October. July–August is warmest but Bled is very crowded. Autumn colours (October) and spring wildflowers (May) are exceptional.
