A few practical tips make the difference between an expensive disappointment and the trip of a lifetime. Here's everything you need to know before visiting Santorini in 2026.
📅 Best Time to Visit Santorini
May and September are the two best months — warm enough to swim (sea 22–26°C), caldera sailing tours running daily and hotel prices 30–50% below peak. The sunsets are identical to August. The crowds are a fraction of the size.
July and August are extraordinary but overwhelming — cruise ships deliver 5,000+ day-trippers to Oia daily. Booking 4–6 months ahead is essential and prices are highest of the year.
October is still warm (24°C sea) and very quiet — excellent for couples and budget travellers. Some restaurants and hotels begin to close from late October.
🗺️ Which Village to Stay In
Oia — most romantic, most expensive, most photographed. Best for honeymooners with no budget constraint. Book 4–6 months ahead for July–August.
Imerovigli — highest point of the caldera rim, arguably better views than Oia at 20–30% lower prices. The sweet spot.
Fira — busiest, most connected, widest range of restaurants and transport. Best for solo travellers and those on tighter budgets.
Perissa/Kamari — beach towns on the east coast. Much cheaper, no caldera views from rooms, excellent black sand beaches.
🚗 Getting Around
Rent an ATV (€25–35/day) for the most flexibility — the island is small (18km long) and an ATV reaches every beach, winery and village. The island bus (KTEL) is cheap (€1.80) but slow and infrequent. Taxis are limited and expensive. Pre-book any transfers for ferry arrivals — the port (Athinios) is 12km from Fira and very chaotic in summer.
⛵ The Caldera Sailing Tour
Book it the moment your dates are confirmed. This is the single most popular experience on the island and sells out weeks ahead in July–August. Look for tours departing 10am (best light), with a maximum of 20–25 people on board (smaller boats = better experience). The hot springs stop (Palea Kameni) and the sunset from the water are the highlights.
🌅 Oia Sunset — How to Do It Right
Arrive at the castle ruins viewpoint 45–60 minutes before sunset in peak season. The crowd starts forming at least 30 minutes early. Alternatively — skip the castle entirely and watch from the caldera path between Oia and Imerovigli, which is 90% less crowded and equally spectacular. Or book a sunset sailing tour and watch from the water.
💰 Budget Tips
Santorini is expensive but not unmanageable with smart choices: eat at tavernas in Fira's backstreets rather than caldera-view restaurants (same quality, 40–60% lower prices); buy groceries from the Fira supermarket for breakfasts and beach lunches; ATV rental is cheaper than taxis; Perissa accommodation is 50–60% cheaper than Oia for identical quality.
✈️ Getting to Santorini
Santorini Airport (JTR) receives direct flights from most major European cities. High-speed ferry from Piraeus (Athens) takes 5 hours. See our Athens to Santorini guide for full options.
FAQs
Is Santorini safe?
Very safe. The main risks are the steep caldera paths (wear flat shoes), strong sun and seasickness on boat tours. Crime is extremely rare.
What currency is used in Santorini?
Euro. Cards are widely accepted. Carry some cash for smaller tavernas, beach vendors and ATV rentals.
Is Santorini good for families?
For families with older children, yes. The caldera paths are not suitable for pushchairs. The east coast beach towns (Perissa, Kamari) are more family-friendly than the clifftop villages.
