17–20°C, post-New Year quiet. Very affordable hotels. Carnival season beginning. Excellent for levada walks without summer heat.
February
17–20°C, Madeira Carnival (February–March) — one of the most colourful in Portugal. Quiet, affordable, warm enough for outdoor activities.
March
18–21°C, early flowers, very manageable crowds, good flight deals. Orchid Festival in March. Excellent shoulder season.
April
19–22°C, Flower Festival (April/May) — Funchal transformed with flower carpets and parades. Levadas at their lushest. Easter events.
May
20–23°C, flowers peak, long warm evenings, sea beginning to warm. Atlantic Festival (late May). One of Madeira's finest months.
June
21–24°C, long days, sea warm enough for swimming, São João festival. Getting busier but still manageable. Book 4–5 weeks ahead.
July
22–25°C, peak European summer tourism. Funchal busy, hotels expensive. Whale watching at its best. Book everything weeks ahead.
August
23–26°C, hottest month, most expensive. Wine Festival (late August). Excellent weather but most crowded. Book 3+ months ahead.
September
22–25°C, Madeira Wine Festival (September) — the harvest season. Sea still warm, crowds dropping. Often the finest month.
October
20–23°C, Nature Festival (hiking focus), excellent levada conditions, lower prices. Highly recommended for active travellers.
November
18–21°C, quiet, good deals. Some rain on the north coast. Funchal begins Christmas illuminations (mid-November — among Europe's best).
December
17–20°C, Christmas lights spectacular. New Year's Eve fireworks — Guinness World Record holder, one of the world's best displays. Book 6 months ahead for NYE.
Madeira Weather Summary
Madeira's subtropical climate gives year-round mild temperatures — typically 17–26°C depending on season and altitude. The south (Funchal) receives significantly more sunshine than the north. Rainfall is most common November–February, and the mountains receive more rain than the coast. The laurisilva forests are lushest from October–June. Sea temperatures range from 18°C (February) to 24°C (September).
When Are Madeira Hotels Cheapest?
January–March and October–November offer the lowest prices — 30–40% below peak summer rates. The exception is New Year's Eve and the week around it — the most expensive period of the year. Book December 28–January 2 stays 4–6 months ahead.

What is the best month to visit Madeira?
April–May for the Flower Festival and best overall conditions. September for the Wine Festival and warm sea. Any month works — Madeira's climate is exceptional year-round.
Does it rain a lot in Madeira?
The south coast (Funchal) gets relatively little rain. The north coast and mountains receive more — this is what keeps the island so spectacularly green. Rain on the north side often means sunshine on the south.
Is Madeira good in winter?
