Month by Month — Lisbon
January
Mild (12–14°C), some rain, very few tourists. Cheapest hotels. Excellent for trams and castle without queues. Great pastéis de nata weather.
February
Warming slightly. Carnival week adds colour. Still very quiet. Some miradouros (viewpoints) especially atmospheric in winter light.
March
Spring arrives — 16–18°C, cherry blossoms. Easter week is significant. Crowd numbers still manageable. One of the most underrated months.
April
19–22°C, spring flowers, outdoor café season. Freedom Day (25 April) — national holiday with events. Book 4–6 weeks ahead.
May
22–26°C, warm evenings, city festival (Santos Populares preparations), long days. Arguably Lisbon's finest month.
June
Santos Populares (June festival — sardines, street parties, city-wide celebration 12–13 June). 26–28°C. Book well ahead for festival week.
July
30–35°C, very crowded. Trams jam-packed. Go early to Alfama. Hotel prices at highest. Still enjoyable with good planning.
August
32–36°C, peak tourist season. Rock in Rio Lisboa (even years). Many locals leave for the Algarve. Expensive and hot.
September
26–28°C, crowds drop after mid-month, sea still warm at Cascais, excellent hotel deals emerge. Often the best month.
October
20–24°C, golden light, wine harvest in Douro valley (day trip territory), manageable crowds, good prices.
November
15–18°C, some rain. Quiet and local. Excellent for food, fado and culture without the tourist scrum.
December
12–15°C, Christmas lights on Avenida da Liberdade are spectacular. New Year's Eve fireworks from the waterfront. Quiet and atmospheric.
