Athens is a year-round destination — but when you visit makes an enormous difference to your experience. The Acropolis in 40°C August heat with 10,000 other tourists is a very different experience to the same site at 8am in May with spring wildflowers growing between the columns. Here's the full picture.

When Are Athens Hotels Cheapest?

The single most important tip for the Acropolis is to go at 8am opening, regardless of the time of year. In summer this is essential (cool marble, no queue, golden light). In spring and autumn it's still the best experience. The site gets significantly more crowded after 10am as tour groups arrive from cruise ships and coach trips. Book timed-entry tickets in advance — they sell out days ahead in summer.
