Bulgaria rewards every type of traveller — history lovers, hikers, skiers, beach-goers and foodies all find extraordinary experiences here at prices that feel almost unfairly low by European standards. Here are the ten experiences that define a great Bulgaria trip.
1. Plovdiv Old Town & Kapana District
Europe's oldest continuously inhabited city — the old town spread across three hills with National Revival mansions, a 2nd-century Roman Amphitheatre and the vibrant Kapana arts district below. One of the finest urban experiences in southeastern Europe, almost entirely unknown outside the region.
💡 Come in the evening when the Kapana bars fill up and the amphitheatre stages its summer concerts.
Book Plovdiv Tours →2. Rila Monastery (UNESCO)
Bulgaria's most sacred and most beautiful site — a vast fortified Orthodox monastery in a Rila mountain gorge, with extraordinary striped arched cloisters, frescoed walls covering every surface and a 14th-century defensive tower. The drive through the gorge is magnificent. An easy day trip from Sofia or Plovdiv.
💡 Arrive before 9am or after 4pm to avoid tour bus crowds. The monastery has a small museum with Bulgaria's finest medieval treasury.
Book Day Trip →3. Rose Valley & Rose Festival
The Valley of Roses between the Balkan and Sredna Gora mountains produces 70% of the world's rose oil. In late May and early June the entire valley is covered in blooming Damascus roses. The Kazanlak Rose Festival (first weekend of June) features rose-picking at dawn, folk costume parades and distillery visits — one of Europe's most unique annual events.

Bulgaria's medieval capital — the Tsarevets Fortress occupies a dramatic rocky promontory in a bend of the Yantra River, with reconstructed walls, the Patriarchal Cathedral and extraordinary views over the gorge. The summer Sound & Light Show (evenings) illuminates the fortress in colour and is genuinely spectacular.
Book Day Trip →5. Thracian Valley Wine Tasting
The Thracian Valley surrounding Plovdiv produces some of Europe's most underrated wines — Mavrud (powerful indigenous red), Rubin, Melnik and excellent Sauvignon Blancs. Guided wine tours visit estates that match anything in Bordeaux for landscape and quality, at a fraction of the price. Katarzyna Estate and Villa Melnik are outstanding.
Book Wine Tour →6. Bansko Ski Resort
70km of well-maintained pistes in the Pirin Mountains, with excellent snow reliability December–March. Bansko's old stone town is beautiful and the après-ski taverna culture (mehanas, rakija, folk music) is excellent. Prices are roughly a third of comparable Alpine resorts.
